After-storm checklist

1.From the ground, walk around the house and look for missing, lifted or creased shingles.
2.Check the yard and driveway for shingle pieces, granules (like coarse sand) and metal flashing.
3.Look at gutters, downspouts and vents for dents, which suggest hail hit the roof too.
4.Inside, check ceilings, top floor corners and the attic for new stains or damp insulation.
5.Photograph everything with the date, before any cleanup or repair.
6.Cover open areas with an emergency tarp if rain is expected.
7.Contact your insurer, then get at least two written estimates from licensed roofers.

What storm damage looks like

Wind damage

Missing shingles, shingles folded back or creased along a line, and lifted ridge caps. Wind often damages the edges and corners of the roof first.

Hail damage

Dark round spots where granules were knocked off, soft dents in shingles, cracked tiles and dented metal vents or gutters.

Fallen branches

Punctures, cracked roof boards and broken gutters. A heavy branch can hide damage underneath, so have it removed carefully.

How do I know if my roof has storm damage?
