Troubleshoot it now
Work through the checks one at a time. If this isn't your problem, the wizard moves on to the related causes.
Are any shingles missing or lifted?
Walk around the house and scan the roof with binoculars, especially after wind. Missing, curled or cracked shingles above the leak confirm it.
Signs it's this problem
- Shingles in the yard after a storm
- Dark, bare or differently colored patches on the roof
- Curled, cracked or lifted shingle edges
- A ceiling stain away from chimneys and vents
Why it happens
Wind lifts shingle tabs and breaks their seal, hail cracks them, and age makes them brittle. Once a shingle is gone, rain reaches the underlayment and nail holes below.

Safety: Don't walk on shingles in extreme heat (they scuff) or cold (they crack), and never on a wet roof.

Common questions
Will new shingles match my roof?
Rarely perfectly, because older shingles fade. Keeping a bundle from your original install, or asking a roofer to source the closest match, gives the best result.
Does insurance pay for missing shingles?
Sudden storm or wind damage is often covered by homeowners insurance, while wear and tear usually isn't. Photograph the damage before repairs and check your policy.
