Make sure the pump is plugged in and reset the GFCI outlet and breaker it's on. Many sump pumps stop because a GFCI tripped.

Why it happens

The sump pump removes groundwater collected by the drain system. If it stops, fails to switch on, or can't keep up during a power outage, the pit overflows and the basement floods.

How to fix it, step by step

1.Check power: make sure the pump is plugged in and the outlet (often a GFCI) and breaker haven't tripped.
2.Lift the float gently or pour a bucket of water into the pit; the pump should start.
3.If it doesn't, unplug it and check that the float moves freely and isn't caught on the pit wall or cord.
4.Pull the pump (unplugged) and clean debris from the intake screen.
5.If the pump runs but water flows back into the pit, replace the check valve on the discharge pipe.
6.Make sure the discharge line outside isn't frozen, clogged or dumping water back next to the house.
7.If the motor hums but doesn't pump, or the pump is 7–10+ years old, replace it.

Safety: Always unplug the pump before reaching into the pit. Water and electricity are a deadly mix.

How long do sump pumps last?

Many last around 7–10 years, depending on how often they run. If your pump is in that range and struggling, replacing it before the next big storm is cheaper than a flooded basement.

Why does my sump pump run constantly?
