Furnace Blower Not Working? Causes & Blower Motor Cost

If the furnace or AC runs but almost no air comes out of the vents, the blower isn't moving air: a failed blower motor, a bad motor capacitor or a control problem. Replacing a standard (PSC) blower motor typically costs $400–$900 installed, and a variable-speed (ECM) motor $600–$2,300.

Try this

Switch the fan to on

Set the thermostat fan from auto to on. If air starts flowing, the blower works and the problem is elsewhere.

Signs it's this problem

  • Little or no air from the vents while the system runs
  • Humming from the furnace but no airflow
  • A burning smell from the indoor unit
  • The furnace overheats and shuts off repeatedly

Why it happens

The blower pushes heated or cooled air through the ducts for both the furnace and the AC. Motors wear out after years of running, their start capacitors fail, and a severely clogged filter makes them overheat.

Safety: Turn off power before opening the furnace. A burning smell means switch the system off and call a technician.

Common questions

Can I run my furnace if the blower doesn't work?

No. Without airflow the furnace overheats and shuts off repeatedly, which stresses the heat exchanger. Turn it off until it's repaired.

Why are ECM blower motors more expensive?

They're variable-speed motors with built-in electronics. They cost more to replace but use less electricity and run more quietly.
