How we research repair costs

Last reviewed September 2026

Our method

  1. For each job, we collect current price ranges from several independent published cost guides.
  2. We compare them and use the range most sources agree on, noting where a job can cost much more.
  3. We express professional prices as US national ranges including labor and materials.
  4. DIY material costs are our own estimates of typical store prices, labelled as approximate.
  5. We review every page at least twice a year and show the review date on the page.

What the ranges don't include

Hidden damage found during the repair (such as rotten roof boards), permits, emergency or after-hours premiums, and interior repairs like drywall and paint are usually extra. Prices are generally higher in large cities and high-cost regions.
