Why it happens

Switches contain small contacts that wear with years of use. Push-in wire connections loosen, and a failing switch may crackle, feel loose, or work only when pressed a certain way.

How to fix it, step by step

1.Replace the bulb and check the breaker.
2.Turn off the breaker and confirm no power at the switch with a voltage tester.
3.Remove the cover plate and unscrew the switch from the box.
4.Photograph the wiring. Look for loose, burnt or backstabbed wires.
5.Move each wire to the matching screw on the new switch, including the green ground screw, and tighten firmly.
6.Fold wires back, mount the switch, restore power and test.
7.Three-way switches (two switches for one light) have an extra 'common' wire; label it before disconnecting.

Safety: Switch boxes may contain wires from more than one circuit. Test every wire with a voltage tester before touching.
